Farm Walk at Finniss: Exploring Biostimulants for Regenerative Agriculture

Activity From The Regenerative Farming In Eastern Mount Lofty Nature Project

On June 22nd, the Eastern Mt Lofty Regenerative Agriculture Group made the most of  the beautiful winter sunshine at group members Colin and Sarah Lindsay's farm in Finniss

The farm walk, part of our ongoing efforts to promote regenerative agriculture, provided an opportunity for members to connect, learn, and be inspired by innovative practices.

The highlight of the day was an engaging presentation by guest speaker Chris Pethick. Chris shared his expertise on the use of worm juice as a biostimulant for regenerative land management. He also provided valuable insights into establishing a worm farm for large-scale application, making it accessible and practical for farmers looking to enhance soil health and productivity sustainably.

This Nature Project Activity is supported by The Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu Grassroots Grants Program and funded by The Landscape Levies.

What Are Biostimulants?

Biostimulants are natural substances that promote plant growth by enhancing nutrient uptake, improving soil health, and stimulating plant metabolism. Unlike traditional fertilisers, biostimulants do not directly provide nutrients but instead boost the efficiency of nutrient use and resilience of plants to environmental stress.

Potential Benefits of Biostimulants in Regenerative Agriculture

  • Improved Soil Health: Biostimulants such as worm juice, increase microbial activity in the soil, promoting a healthy soil ecosystem. This leads to better nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition, resulting in richer, more fertile soil.

  • Enhanced Plant Growth: By stimulating plant metabolism and nutrient uptake, biostimulants can help plants grow stronger and more resilient. This is particularly beneficial in regenerative agriculture, where the focus is on building long-term soil fertility and plant health.

  • Increased Resilience to Stress: Biostimulants improve plants' ability to withstand abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures. This resilience is crucial for sustainable farming practices that aim to reduce dependency on chemical inputs.

  • Sustainable Yield Improvements: Using biostimulants can lead to higher crop yields without the need for excessive chemical fertilisers.

  • Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly: Biostimulants, particularly those derived from natural sources like worm juice, can offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional agricultural inputs. They help reduce the environmental footprint of farming while maintaining or even improving productivity.

The Eastern Mt Lofty Regenerative Agriculture Group has consistently met throughout the past year, fostering a community of learning and collaboration. Our farm walks and workshops have featured fantastic speakers and hands-on experiences, equipping members with knowledge and practical skills to implement regenerative practices on their farms.
