Reed Planting In The Lower Lakes
Nature Activity From The On-Ground For Nature Project
The Second Nature works crew recently engaged in a unique project, replanting reeds in Lakes Albert and Alexandrina, managed by the Coorong District Council and funded by BHP Olympic Dam.
The proven method for re-establishing reed beds involves digging up clumps with an excavator and transplanting them in smaller clumps parallel to the lake edge as can be seen in the image below. With a water pump and a bit of foot pressing, large distances of reedbeds have been reestablished with this method.
This initiative aims to combat lakeshore erosion caused by wave action during low water levels and provide a thriving habitat for native species to support biodiversity, including nationally threatened species like the Orange Bellied Parrot, Southern Mount Lofty Ranges Emu Wren, and the Murray Cod.
This On Ground Work was managed by the Coorong District Council and funded by BHP Olympic Dam.
