It’s Turtle Month!

Activity From The Nature Education Project

Every November, we celebrate one of our most important and ancient creatures—turtles!

From their crucial role in our ecosystems to the challenges they face, now is the time to learn, appreciate, and take action for these incredible species.

Turtles are nature’s recyclers, helping maintain healthy waterways, but they’re facing major threats like habitat loss, predation, and climate change.

Recently, Professor Mike Thompson from Sydney University and Deanne from the Alexandrina Wildlife Support Group led an insightful session about our local turtles and the challenges they face. A key theme from the day was how small actions from the community can make a big difference.

What can YOU do to help?

  • Learn about your local turtle species so you know when you see one

  • Get involved in citizen science—report turtle sightings on TurtleSat

  • Safely move turtles off the road if you see one crossing

  • Protect turtle habitat by reducing waste and supporting restoration projects

Citizen science data is vital—it helps conservationists and researchers understand where turtles are thriving or struggling and reveals trends in population and habitat changes. By contributing, you're helping build a clearer picture of our local turtle populations and supporting efforts to protect these unique creatures.
